New Jersey Eliminates the Three-Class System

In one of the most dramatic regulatory moves of the year, New Jersey has eliminated the three-class system that most states use to categorize e-bikes and has instead reclassified all electric bicycles as “motorized bicycles.” The practical implications are significant: e-bike riders in New Jersey now need to register their bikes with the Motor Vehicle Commission, carry liability insurance, and hold a valid driver’s license.
