The knock against e-bikes has always been the same: if a motor is helping you pedal, are you really getting a workout? A new study that strapped lab-grade sensors onto everyday riders during their real commutes says yes — and by a wider margin than many skeptics would guess. On average, e-bike commuting registered as genuinely hard exercise, with nearly half of the typical ride reaching vigorous intensity.
The findings, published in 2026 in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, add hard numbers to a debate that has followed pedal-assist bikes since they went mainstream. And they carry a clear public-health message: swapping the car for an e-bike is not a shortcut around exercise — it may be one of the easiest ways to build real activity into a busy day.
What the Study Found
Researchers led by Amund Riiser in Norway recruited 19 regular commuters, with an average age of 41, and measured them during their normal rides on their own e-bikes — not in a lab, but out on the roads and hills they ride every day. Using portable equipment, the team recorded oxygen consumption, power output, heart rate, perceived exertion, and GPS position, then broke each commute down into short segments to see how hard people were actually working.
Intensity was graded using metabolic equivalents, or METs, the standard yardstick for exercise effort. On downhill segments, average intensity was moderate (4.6–4.8 METs); on the flat it was higher (5.5–5.9 METs); and uphill it tipped firmly into vigorous territory (7.0–7.5 METs). In other words, the motor flattens the worst of the effort spikes but does not erase them — riders still work hard, especially when the road points up. The authors concluded that e-bike commuters “self-selected moderate to vigorous intensities” that align with international physical-activity guidelines, and that policies nudging people out of cars and onto e-bikes could deliver meaningful public-health gains.

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate, or 75 minutes of vigorous, activity per week. Most adults fall short, and “I don’t have time to exercise” is the reason given more than almost any other.
